Janet Swan
Janet Swan leads one to one sessions for people who would like to focus on breath support for singing and especially if you find yourself short of breath (when singing or otherwise). Janet was a Speech and Language Therapist before becoming a choir leader and has undertaken Singing for Breathing training with The British Lung Foundation. Anastasia Micklethwaite
Anastasia and I haven’t met (yet!) but she has run various local choirs that I’ve heard great things about. She currently directs Sing Joyfully! in Kirkby Lonsdale – a choir focussed on the joy of singing and encouraging vocal health, and which sings a wide range of music from classical to pop, and everything in-between. She teaches privately from her studio in Askam in Furness, both in-person and online, so her pupils are local and nationwide.
“I trained at Chetham’s School of Music and Cambridge University, and have been teaching singing 1:1 for over 35 years. I am a singer, flautist and conductor, with experience of working with all age groups (adults and children). Some students sing purely for pleasure, some prepare for concerts, some take exams, prepare for university, music college, scholarships, GCSEs, A levels, shows, National Youth Choir auditions etc. My exam pupils have a 100% pass rate (most with Merit or Distinction)” Click on Anastasia’s name above, which is a link to her website. Sarah Gray
Sarah is based in north Cumbria and runs the Soup and Sing sessions mentioned on One-Off Workshops page. She says “I teach singing, lead workshops and offer ‘choir clinics’ throughout Northumberland, Cumbria and Scotland. I teach people with all levels of experience (including none!) and coach singers through Trinity Guildhall grades up to Grade 8. I teach in Penrith every 5 weeks or so. Our ‘Soup and Sing’ workshops (led with Alison Scott) held quarterly in Mosedale and Ingram Valley are very popular, and recently I have been collaborating with a yoga teacher to offer a unique ‘Stretch and Sing’ workshop which combines yoga and singing technique. If you have a group of friends interested in this we would happily come over to Cumbria.” For details and costs telephone Sarah on 07832 118718 or email
Helen Porter
Both Clare and Rachael have had lessons at times with Helen who is wonderful. She’s 100s of miles from Kendal so you’d need to be happy to work on Zoom with her. We’ve found her super helpful with specific questions we had (both about voice care, and about choir leading).
Judith Gardener Jones
Judith says “I trained at the Royal College of Music at post-graduate level in Opera Performance and Singing. Since then I have been a professional singer and voice teacher for around 30 years. I performed in diverse genres from Wagner at Longborough to Phantom in the West End. From 2011 to 2021 I lectured in singing at Edinburgh College, teaching Rock & Pop, Music Theatre and Classical Singing as well as lecturing in Pedagogy. I teach all age groups, am a visiting teacher of singing to several schools and have a busy private practise. I am passionate about enabling you to find your voice.”
Judith runs workshops designed to help you get the very best from your voice by breaking free from ideas about singing that hold you back, created for singers who sing regularly, who don’t have individual singing lessons but would still like to improve their singing skills.
Please feel free to let us know of other singing teachers locally. It’s very personal whether one teacher works for you.
